The state bed is the central piece of furniture in the count’s bedroom.
The impressive bed is a significant status symbol in the 18th century, and the story behind it has links to the court of the French king Louis XIV (the Sun King) where a select circle of people were invited to witness the royal morning toilette, which took place in the king’s bedchamber with the bed as its centrepiece.
The bed served as a splendid prop in this carefully choreographed morning ritual. Things never got that elaborate here in Denmark, but nevertheless the state bed served to emphasise the count’s elevated position even when he wasn’t present.
