The Jens Juel Portraits

The art treasure that came home

In the parlour hangs a fine set of family portraits made by the Danish court painter Jens Juel between 1781 and 1794.

From the window moving right: Jørgen Scheel (1718-86), his grandson Jørgen Scheel (1768-1825) with his wife, Christiane Mette Bille Brahe (1771-1844) and finally Charlotte Louise von Plessen (1720-1801). From the corner onwards Jens Juel’s paintings of the sisters Lucie Charlotte Scheel, later Sehestedt Juul, (1765-1839) and Berte Scheel, later Brockenhuus, (1767-87).

In 1926 the Scheel family lost Gammel Estrup and their possessions were scattered to the four winds. These portraits were later retraced and bought by the museum.
