The Tapestries

Eight exceptional manors

The walls of the hall are covered with precious woven tapestries. They show the manors of the Scheels around 1690: Gammel Estrup, Ulstrup, Sostrup, Skærvad and Ørbæk in Eastern Jutland and Krenkerup, Nørregård and Rosenlund at Lolland.

The tapestries were ordered by Jørgen Scheel (1656-95), but he died before they were finished, and his son, Christen, was the one to hang the tapestries in the great hall.

Flemish weavers in Copenhagen

The tapestries are attributed to the flemish weaver Berent van der Eichen’s workshop in Copenhagen, and they are a unique piece of Danish art. No other tapestries depicting known Danish manors have survived.

Two additional manors are to be found in the hall: Skjern and Karmark, which Christen Scheel bought in 1721, but he had them painted rather than weaved.
