The Wedding Portrait

The end wall of the bed chamber features the double portraits of Christen Skeel “the Rich” (1623-88) and his wife Birgitte Rosenkrantz (1633-77) by court painter Abraham Wuchters.

The portrait was painted in 1652 and is probably a wedding picture. A couple of years earlier, Christen Skeel had returned from a nine-year trip abroad that included a visit to the court of King Louis XIV of France.

At the time, the French court set the trend for the rest of Europe, and Christen Skeel’s suit in this painting was the height of fashion in France.
