The wall decorations are made to look like draped cloth in blue and black, hung between vertical columns. At the top, the decorations have painted tassels and at the bottom a broad, black border resembling a strip of heavy trimming along the draped “fabric”.
This decoration was probably made in the first decades of the 17th century and is a continuation of an old custom of draping the walls with costly hangings for special occasions. The custom gradually evolved into painting illusions of such drapings directly on the wall using plaster instead of actually hanging up the fabrics. This made for cheaper and more permanent decorations, but they lacked the tactility of the textiles and provided no warmth.
