In 1717, Christen Scheel of Gammel Estrup marries Baroness Augusta Winterfeldt. They take up residence at Gammel Estrup and soon start to refurbish the manor into a splendid modern home suitable for one of the first families in the country. They take their inspiration from France whose glorious chateaux are seen as a credit to the king. The European elite embrace this view, and manors and castles soon become a means to show off one’s wealth, refinement and standing.
At Gammel Estrup, the most resplendent rooms are on the first floor as fashion dictates. Here, the master and mistress each have their chambers. The Antechamber is where visitors wait to be received, so the chamber must show off the family’s high standing.
