In the 18th century, the homes of the elite are divided into presentational and private rooms. The presentational rooms are for visitors and guests, and against the backdrop of the beautiful and costly interiors, the family play the part they wish the world to see.
The bedchamber is a richly furnished reception room in the Baroque style – a style very fond of illusions: The wooden panels and door frames are painted to resemble marble, and the ceiling seems to open its stuccoed surface to the sky.
The wooden floor is painted like marble laid in various patterns, not as a cheaper substitute, but to show that it is possible to create an illusion surpassing nature.
