Food & Drink

Treat yourself to coffee and home-baked cake in Gammel Estrup's authentic manor house kitchen — furnished as it was 100 years ago with the old wood-burning stove and original recipes. You may even meet the housekeeper and kitchen maids, who serve coffee from the large blue enamel pot.

Guided Tours

One of the museum's dedicated guides takes you around the main building and provides a historical walkthrough of Gammel Estrup, its interiors and the manor house's colourful cast of characters.

Practical Info

Gammel Estrup is located near Auning in northern Djursland, roughly halfway along Route 16 between Randers and Grenaa. Nearest towns: Aarhus (40 km), Randers (20 km), Grenaa (35 km), Ebeltoft (42 km).

The nearest public bus stop is approximately 100 metres away. Bus line 212 runs directly to the museum.

There are over 1,000 free parking spaces located directly in front of the ticket office.

The car park also has a few disabled parking spaces and electric vehicle charging stations.

You are welcome to bring your own packed lunch.

Packed lunches can be eaten indoors in the manor house cellar or outdoors at the garden’s picnic tables.

In the Manor House Garden, there is an exciting playground featuring a climbing tower and sound columns.

The playground clearly references Gammel Estrup’s manor house complex, including its ramparts, bridges, and the characteristic octagonal tower.

From the ticket office, a special stone paving has been laid to allow wheelchair users to access the manor house and the Baroque Garden without difficulty. The wide paths in the Baroque Garden are surfaced with hard-packed gravel, while the courtyard has cobblestones, which can be challenging for wheelchairs and walking frames.

Unfortunately, it is not possible to modify the manor house’s access points and staircases, so wheelchair users and those with severely impaired mobility cannot reach the exhibitions on the upper floors. The ground floor is accessible via ramps – please contact the shop upon arrival for assistance.

Narrow doorways and changes in floor levels make it very difficult to bring prams and pushchairs into the main building. We recommend using a baby carrier for younger children and leaving prams in the courtyard.

Dogs are welcome in the museum’s outdoor areas if kept on a lead. Dogs are not allowed indoors, except for guide dogs. A water bowl is available in the courtyard.

There are two toilets, one with a baby changing table, on the ground floor of Gammel Estrup with entrance from the courtyard.

In the park behind the playground there are two additional toilets, including one accessible toilet

Photography for private use is permitted both outdoors and indoors on the museum grounds.

If you wish to photograph or film for publication or commercial purposes, you must obtain permission from the museum. Once permission is granted, a fee will be agreed upon.

It is always possible to take a walk in the museum's outdoor area outside opening hours. You are also welcome to walk in Løvenholmskoven on the opposite side of the main road (from sunrise to sunset).

During opening hours, you need a ticket to enter the museum grounds. There is free access to the recreational area on the Allingå side of the manor, where there is a canoeing area, playground, toilet building, etc. If you want to take a walk in the recreational area at Gammel Estrup during the museum's opening hours, you can park in the parking lot and walk along the cycle path past the blacksmith, along the main road and into the goods entrance to Gammel Estrup.

To the east of Gammel Estrup runs the Alling stream. South of the main building there is a canoe launch with tables and benches as well as information stations that can be used free of charge.

If you enter the museum grounds, you must purchase a ticket.

Gammel Estrup is a historic, listed building. As such, it does not meet modern standards for access, accessibility, or comfort. Visitors should exercise caution both outdoors and indoors.

Bats can be found in various parts of the building, including the Alchemist's Cellar. They are a protected species, and the museum is therefore unable to remove them. The bats are primarily active at night, and visitors are advised not to touch them.

All movement, both indoors and outdoors, is at your own risk.
